A site app taking users through the real world locations that inspired settings for Studio Ghibli films.
Impact
This app deepens engagement for Ghibli fans by connecting beloved film settings to their real-world inspirations. By situating Studio Ghibli’s creative process within these locations, the app provides cultural and geographic context that enhances users’ appreciation of the films. Users not only gain educational insights but also feel a stronger emotional connection to the stories, understanding how authenticity in setting contributes to the magic of Ghibli.
Research & Identifying Problems
Early sketches and wireframes helped test layouts and navigation, but feedback showed the clean, modern style didn’t fit the app’s concept. Usability testing revealed two issues: a confusing carousel interaction and no clear visualization of how locations connected globally.I combined sketch-style GIFs with handwritten-inspired and digital serif type to reflect both drawing and Ghibli’s branding. The carousel was simplified for clarity, and a scrollable animated map was added to show relationships between locations.
If this project were to continue, I would add brief Ghibli cutscenes before the carousels appear and add a function that lets users plan curated trips to the real-world locations featured in the app.
